Taping and bundling is the stage that turns a set of terminated wires into a harness: tape fixes the branches along their length, and a tie closes the bundle so it holds its shape. It is the operation most often still done by hand, and the one where labour cost concentrates on a harness line. The first specification to fix is the wrap pattern, because full wrap, point wrap and spiral are different heads and the pattern is set by the harness drawing rather than by preference. Full wrap means tape applied continuously along the branch so the finished surface is taped end to end — no gaps, no exposed wire between wraps. It is specified where the drawing calls for complete coverage: branches that rub against a panel edge, runs that pass through a grommet, or harnesses where the tape is also the abrasion shield. The two variables are tape width and overlap percentage, and both change the tape consumption figure, which is often the real cost driver over a year of production. Machines are built in overhead and desktop forms. If the drawing marks tape only at intervals, the single-point machines use less tape and run faster for the same job.

Here the wrapping material is conductive. Copper strip or copper foil is wound onto a conductor, a shield or a joint to create a continuous conductive path over a length, which is how shielding terminations and busbar wraps are made. Because the material is metal, the machine behaves differently from a tape wrapper: tension has to be controlled so the strip does not deform the substrate or spring back, and the wrap must overlap consistently or the connection resistance varies along its length. Specify the strip width and thickness, the substrate, the overlap and the required wrap length. This page also absorbs the copper foil wrapping line, which was the same operation under a different name.

Single-point and point wrapping apply tape at defined positions rather than continuously: the branch is fixed where the drawing marks it, and the stretches in between stay uncovered. It uses less tape and completes faster than full wrap, and it is the correct choice whenever the requirement is to hold wires together at intervals rather than to protect them along their length — which is most of the time, if the harness drawing is read literally. The specification inputs are the number and spacing of tape points, the tape width and the branch diameter. Desktop, coil and transfer-type versions exist; the branch geometry usually decides which.

Tape cutting sits upstream of every wrapping operation, and it is a cutting problem rather than a wrapping one: the material is adhesive, it stretches, and it must be cut square without the adhesive smearing onto the blade. Machines on this page cover cold, hot and rotary knife methods, and handle paper, cloth, PVC, vinyl and hook-and-loop tape as well as shaped and die-cut pieces. The sizing inputs are tape width and thickness, cut length, and whether the tape is single- or double-sided. Hot cutting is used where the cut edge must be sealed so the tape does not fray — a requirement that appears on hook-and-loop and cloth tape far more often than on PVC.
